Shape
Among the tetra species, a black neon tetra is considered a small fish. Despite the slim body, this fish has huge fins in its pelvic, caudal, and dorsal. Adipose fin which is common in Characid’s family can also be found in this fish. Typically, black neon tetra lifespan ranges from five to ten years and can grow up to 1,5 inches (4 cm) in the home aquarium.

Body Color

Its body color is one of the most popular characteristics of the Black Neon Tetra fish.  There are two distinctive adjacent stripes encompass from its caudal fin to gill cover. Commonly, the stripes have greenish and gleaming white hues with basic silver pigmentation. People often confuse this fish with Neon Tetra since it also has shiny horizontal stripes in its body. However, you can easily identify Black Neon Tetra fish by noticing the contrast-rich velvety black color beneath its stripes. Also, spot the bright orange hue in its big eyes’ upper part. Sexual Differences

While the sexual differences between male and female black neon tetras are not palpable, the female variety generally has a bigger body than the male fish. It is easier to notice its female kind when this fish is sexually mature. The female black neon tetra tends to have a bigger and rounder abdomen since it is filled with eggs. You can also observe the stripes in this fish’s body to spot the sexual difference. The horizontal stripes in the female’s kind are less seamless and the black color beneath the stripes is dotted with blue scales.
