How to Maintain Black Neon Tetra Fish in An Aquarium

Description: The maintenance of Black Neon Tetra fish in the aquarium is not extremely difficult. However, read this to help make it easier to maintain one.

Black Neon Tetras are freshwater fishes that can be found in the river basin of Brazil and Paraguay. Currently, they have been successfully cultivated in captivity. Thus, it is quite easy to find black neon tetra for sale in the aquarium trade. For beginner aquarists, they are one of the best options for your aquarium fish. Besides its attractive body colors, the maintenance of Black Neon Tetra fish in the aquarium is not extremely difficult. Below are some things you need to keep in mind.

Proper Tank

Ideally, a tank of 20 inches long with minimal 20 gallons water is needed for the maintenance of Black Neon Tetra fish in the aquarium since they are very active swimmers. Utilize dim lighting to have shadowy ambiance for the best display of their body’s iridescent. Make sure to cover the tank to prevent them from jumping out of the aquarium since they are skilled jumpers.

Imitate the Native Habitat

In the wild, Black Neon Tetras live in exceptionally clear fresh water. Imitate the habitat of this fish by using proper filtration and replacing 20 to 50 percent of water regularly, especially when the tank is heavily stocked.  This way, nitrates, ammonia, and other substances harmful to fish will be eliminated.

These fishes typically tend to stay in small creeks, tributaries, and sandbanks in nature. The water here is slightly acidic and has a stained brown hue due to the chemicals produced by rotting organic substances.  Even though Black Neon Tetras are fairly adaptive to the hard-neutral water, maintaining acidic water is better to boost the looks of their magnificent body colors. In addition, add some decaying leaves in the tank to mimic the light brown coloration in the wild.

Tank Mates

Adult Black Neon Tetras size can be up to 1.5 inches. Thus, they are considered small fishes and need to be maintained in groups of at least five fishes. In a larger community aquarium, you will have no problem placing several groups of this fish since they are peaceful. However, you need to make sure that the Black Neon Tetras’ tank mates are not larger than them. Fishes with a mouth big enough to swallow the black neon tetras will eat them sooner or later.

Those are several things you need to know for the maintenance of Black Neon Tetra fish in the aquarium.
